History of the Building:

Built in 1891, this building was a joint venture of the Castor family and the Cherokee Tribe, Lodge No. 96 of the Independent Order of Red Men.  Stepped gables and recessed stilted arches are prominent features.  A decorative motive over the windows and the inscription "7th Sun Snow Moon GSD 399" can be found in the semicircular inset tablet over the center bay of the blind windows.  This is the IORM system of dating called the Great Sun Date.  The organization bases it on the Native American system and their years begin with 1492.  Translated, the date is February 7, 1890, the date of the formation of the Noblesville chapter.

William H. Castor financed and owned the first two floors, and the IORM financed and owned the third floor.  This split ownership of the building continued through subsequent owners until sometime around 1950.
